2c. Muhammad & Aisha

Aisha

Muhammad was 51 years old when he married the 6 years old girl Aisha. She was his favorite wife.

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 7, Book 62, Hadith 18
Narrated ‘Urwa: The Prophet asked Abu Bakr for `Aisha’s hand in marriage. Abu Bakr said “But I am your brother.” The Prophet said, “You are my brother in Allah’s religion and His Book, but she (Aisha) is lawful for me to marry.”

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 7, Book 62, Hadith 64
Narrated Aisha: that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 7, Book 62, Hadith 163
Narrated Aisha: The Prophet was screening me with his Rida’ (garment covering the upper part of the body) while I was looking at the Ethiopians who were playing in the courtyard of the mosque. (I continued watching) till I was satisfied. So you may deduce from this event how a little girl (who has not reached the age of puberty) who is eager to enjoy amusement should be treated in this respect.
(In this hadith, Aisha had not reached puberty – according to Saudi Arabian translator Dr. Muhsin Khan)

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 5, Book 58, Hadith 236
Narrated Aisha: The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six. We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down (fever). Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became all right, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, “Best wishes and Allah’s Blessing and a good luck.” Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah’s Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age.

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 5, Book 58, Hadith 236
Narrated Hisham’s father: Khadija died three years before the Prophet departed to Medina. He stayed there for two years or so and then he married Aisha when she was a girl of six years of age, and he consumed that marriage when she was nine years old.

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 8, Book 73, Hadith 151
Narrated Aisha: I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my girl friends also used to play with me. When Allah’s Apostle used to enter (my dwelling place) they used to hide themselves, but the Prophet would call them to join and play with me. (The playing with the dolls and similar images is forbidden, but it was allowed for Aisha at that time, as she was a little girl, NOT YET REACHED THE AGE OF PUBERTY.) (Fateh-al-Bari page 143, Vol.13) (Hadith: Playing with dolls is permitted only to prepubescent children.)

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 3, Book 48, Hadith 829
….Buraira said, ‘No, by Allah Who has sent you with the Truth, I have never seen in her anything faulty except that she is a girl of IMMATURE AGE, who sometimes sleeps and leaves the dough for the goats to eat.’ …

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 2, Book 26, Hadith 631
…Aisha added, “Allah’s Apostle came to me and saw me weeping and said, “What makes you weep, O Hantah?” I replied, “I have heard your conversation with your companions and I cannot perform the Umra.” He asked, “What is wrong with you?’ I replied, ‘I do not offer the prayers (i.e. I have my menses).’ He said, ‘It will not harm you for you are one of the daughters of Adam, and Allah has written for you (this state) as He has written it for them. Keep on with your intentions for Hajj and Allah may reward you that.” Aisha further added, “Then we proceeded for Hajj till we reached Mina and I became clean from my menses.

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 1, Book 6, Hadith 293
Narrated Al-Qasim: Aisha said, “We set out with the sole intention of performing Hajj and when we reached Sarif, (a place six miles from Mecca) I got my menses. Allah’s Apostle came to me while I was weeping. He said ‘What is the matter with you? Have you got your menses?’ I replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘This is a thing which Allah has ordained for the daughters of Adam. So do what all the pilgrims do with the exception of the Taw-af (Circumambulation) round the Ka’ba.” Aisha added, “Allah’s Apostle sacrificed cows on behalf of his wives.”

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 7, Book 62, Hadith 15
Narrated Aisha: Allah’s Apostle said (to me), “You have been shown to me twice in (my) dreams. A man was carrying you in a silken cloth (as an infant) and said to me, ‘This is your wife.’ I uncovered it; and behold, it was you. I said to myself, ‘If this dream is from Allah, He will cause it to come true.’“

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 1, Book 4, Hadith 231
Narrated Sulaiman bin Yasar: I asked `Aisha about the clothes soiled with semen. She replied, “I used to wash it off the clothes of Allah’s Messenger and he would go for the prayer while water spots were still visible.”

Sahih Muslim – Book 2, Hadith 567
Al-Aawad and Hammam reported A’isha as saying: I used to scrape off the (drop of) semen from the garment of the Messenger of Allah.

Sunan Abu Dawud – Book 1, Hadith 372
‘Aishah reported: I used to rub off the semen from the cloth of the Messenger of Allah. He would pray in it.

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 7, Book 62, Hadith 67
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “A matron should not be given in marriage except after consulting her; and a virgin should not be given in marriage except after her permission.” The people asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! How can we know her permission?” He said, “Her silence (indicates her permission).”

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 7, Book 62, Hadith 68
Narrated Aisha: I said, “O Allah’s Apostle! A virgin feels shy.” He said, “Her consent is (expressed by) her silence.”

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 7, Book 62, Hadith 16 & 17
Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah: When I got married, Allah’s Apostle said to me, “What type of lady have you married?” I replied, “I have married a matron’ He said, “Why, don’t you have a liking for the virgins and for fondling them?” Jabir also said: Allah’s Apostle said, “why didn’t you marry a young girl so that you might play with her and she with you?’

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 6, Book 61, Hadith 515
….While I was a young girl of playing age, the following Verse was revealed in Mecca to Muhammad: ‘Nay! But the Hour is their appointed time (for their full recompense), and the Hour will be more grievous and more bitter.’ (54.46) Sura Al-Baqara (The Cow) and Surat An-Nisa (The Women) were revealed while I was with him.” Then Aisha took out the copy of the Qur’an for the man and dictated to him the Verses of the Suras (in their proper order)

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 1, Book 6, Hadith 298
Narrated Aisha: The Prophet and I used to take a bath from a single pot while we were Junub. During the menses, he used to order me to put on an Izar (dress worn below the waist) and used to fondle me. While in Itikaf, he used to bring his head near me and I would wash it while I used to be in my periods (menses).

Her marriage was consummated in the year 622, and this journey for hajj took place in 629. Therefore, Aisha was about sixteen years old at the time of her first menstruation.

Sahih Muslim – Book 31, Hadith 5981
‘A’isha reported that she used to PLAY WITH DOLLS in the presence of Allah’s Messenger and when her playmates came to her they left (the house) because they felt shy of Allah’s Messenger, whereas Allah’s Messengers sent them to her.

Sahih Muslim – Book 8, Hadith 3311
‘A’isha reported that Allah’s Apostle married her when she was seven years old, and he was taken to his house AS A BRIDE WHEN SHE WAS NINE, AND HER DOLLS WERE WITH HER; and when he (the Holy Prophet) died she was eighteen years old.

Sahih Muslim – Book 8, Hadith 3310
‘A’isha reported: Allah’s Apostle married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house when I was nine years old.

Sunan Abu Dawud – Book 2, Hadith 2116
Aisha said, “The Apostle of Allah married me when I was seven years old.” (The narrator Sulaiman said: “Or six years.”). “He had intercourse with me when I was 9 years old.”

Sunan Abu Dawud – Book 41, Hadith 4915
Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu’minin: The Apostle of Allah married me when I was seven or six. When we came to Medina, some women came. According to Bishr’s version: Umm Ruman came to me when I was swinging. They took me, made me prepared and decorated me. I was then brought to the Apostle of Allah, and he took up cohabitation with me when I was nine. She halted me at the door, and I burst into laughter.

Sunan Abu Dawud – Book 13, Hadith 2380
Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu’minin: The Prophet used to kiss her and suck her tongue when he was fasting.

Sunan Abu Dawud – Book 1, Hadith 270 (Thighing)
Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu’minin: One night he entered (upon me) while I was menstruating. He went to the place of his prayer, that is, to the place of prayer reserved (for this purpose) in his house. He did not return until I felt asleep heavily, and he felt pain from cold. And he said: Come near me. I said: I am menstruating. He said: Uncover your thighs. I, therefore, uncovered both of my thighs. Then he put his cheek and chest on my thighs and I lent upon he until he became warm and slept.

Aisha wasn’t the only young girl Muhammad had eyes for:

Musnad Ahmad – Hadith 25636
Muhammad saw Um Habiba the daughter of Abbas while she was fatim (age of nursing) and he said, “If she grows up while I am still alive, I will marry her.”

Ibn Ishaq -The Life of Muhammad: trans. by A. Guillaume [Oxf Uni. Press, Karachi], Page 311
Ibn Ishaq: Suhayli, 2.79: In the riwaya of Yunus Ibn Ishaq recorded that the Apostle saw Ummu’l-Fadl when she was baby crawling before him and said, ‘If she grows up and I am still alive I will marry her.’ ( p. 311)

The History of al-Tabari, Volume IX, P. 128
Abu Ja‘far [al-Tabari]: The Messenger of God did not marry another woman during the life of Khadijah until she passed away. When she died, the Messenger of God got married, but [opinions] differ as to whom he married first after Khadijah. Some say that it was ‘A’isha bt. Abi Bakr al-Siddiq, while others say that it was Sawdah bt. Zam‘ah b. Qays b. ‘Abd Shams b. ‘Abd Wudd b. Nasr. As for ‘A’isha, when he married her she was very young AND NOT READY YET FOR CONSUMMATION, whereas Sawdah was already married before…
