9a. Animal Cruelty in Islam

Animal cruelty in Islam is so severe that one is disgusted by it. Let’s examine how animals are perceived in Islam.

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 4, Book 54, Hadith 540:
Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar: Allah’s Apostle ordered that the dogs should be killed.

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 4, Book 54, Hadith 531
Narrated Aisha: The Prophet said, “Five kinds of animals are mischief-doers and can be killed even in the Sanctuary: They are the rat, the scorpion, the kite, the crow and the rabid dog.”

Sahih Muslim – Book 4, Hadith 1032
Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of ‘Allah said: When any one of you stands for prayer and there is a thing before him equal to the back of the saddle that covers him and in case there is not before him (a thing) equal to the back of the saddle, his prayer would be cut off by (passing of an) ass, woman, and black Dog. I said: O Abu Dharr, what feature is there in a black dog which distinguish it from the red dog and the yellow dog? He said: O, son of my brother, I asked the Messenger of Allah as you are asking me, and he said: The black dog is a devil.

Sahih Muslim – Book 10, Hadith 3809
Ibn ‘Umar (Allah be pleased with them) reported Allah’s Messenger giving command for killing dogs.

Sahih Muslim – Book 10, Hadith 3810
Ibn ‘Umar reported: Allah’s Apostle ordered to kill dogs, and he sent (men) to the corners of Medina that they should be killed.

Sahih Muslim – Book 10, Hadith 3811
Abdullah (b. Umar) reported: Allah’s Messenger ordered the killing of dogs and we would send (men) in Medina and its corners and we did not spare any dog that we did not kill, so much so that we killed the dog that accompanied the wet she-camel belonging to the people of the desert.

Sahih Muslim – Book 10, Hadith 3812
Ibn Umar reported that Allah’s Messenger ordered the killing of dogs except the dog tamed for hunting, or watching of the herd of sheep or other domestic animals.

Sahih Muslim – Book 10, Hadith 3813
Abu Zubair heard Jabir b. ‘Abdullah (Allah be pleased with him) saying: Allah’s Messenger ordered us to kill dogs, and we carried out this order so much so that we also kill the dog coming with a woman from the desert. Then Allah’s Apostle forbade their killing. He (the Holy Prophet further) said: It is your duty the jet-black (dog) having two spots (on the eyes), for it is a devil.

Sahih Muslim – Book 10, Hadith 3814
Ibn Mughaffal reported: Allah’s Messenger ordered the killing of dogs and then said: what is the trouble with them (the people of Medina)? How dogs are nuisance to them (the citizens of Medina)? He then permitted keehing of dogs for hunting and (the protection of) herds. In the hadith transmitted on the authority of Yahya, he (the Holy Prophet) permitted the keeping of dogs for (the protection of) herds, for hunting and (the protection of) cultivated land.

Sunan Abu Dawud – Book 16, Hadith 2839
Narrated Abdullah ibn Mughaffal: The Prophet said: Were dogs not a species of creature I should command that they all be killed; but kill every pure black one.

Sunan Abu Dawud – Volume 5, Book 42, Hadith 4285
It was narrated form ‘Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Messenger of Allah said: “Were it not that dogs form one of the communities (or nations – of creatures), I would have commanded that they be killed. But kill those that are all black. Any people who keep a dog, except for dogs used for farming, hunting or herding livestock, one Qirat will be deducted from their reward each day.”

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 1, Book 4, Hadith 173
Allah’s Messenger said, “If a dog drinks from the utensil of anyone of you it is essential to wash it seven times.”

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 4, Book 54, Hadith 539
Narrated Abu Talha: The Prophet said, “Angels do not enter a house that has either a dog or a picture in it.”

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 1, Book 5, Hadith 950
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: “The prayer is severed by a woman, a dog and a donkey.”

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 4, Book 54, Hadith 541
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger said, “If somebody keeps a dog, he loses one Qirat (of the reward) of his good deeds everyday, except if he keeps it for the purpose of agriculture or for the protection of livestock.

Jami’ at-Tirmidhi – Book 16, Hadith 1486
Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Mughaffal: That the Messenger of Allah said: “If it were not that dogs were part of a nation among the nations, then I would order to that all of them be killed. So kill every one of them that is all black.”

Sunan an-Nasa’i – Book 42, Hadith 4284
It was narrated form Ibn ‘Umar that: the Messenger of Allah commanded that all dogs be killed except dogs used for hunting or herding livestock.

Sunan an-Nasa’i – Book 42, Hadith 4281
It was narrated that Az-Zuhri said: “Ibn As-Sabbaq said: “Maimunah told me that Jibril said to the Messenger of Allah ‘We (Angles) do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture, The next day the Messenger of Allah commanded that all dogs be killed, even small dogs.”’

Sunan Ibn Majah – Book 28, Hadith 3203
It was narrated from Salim that his father said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah raising his voice and commanding that dogs be killed, and dogs were killed, except for hunting dogs or dogs kept for herding livestock.”

Sunan Ibn Majah – Book 28, Hadith 3205
It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Messenger of Allah said: “Were it not that dogs form one of the communities (or nations – of creatures), I would have commanded that they be killed. But kill those that are all black. There are no people who keep a dog, except for dogs used for herding livestock, hunting or farming, but two Qirat will be deducted from their reward each day.”

Sahih Bukhari – Volume 4, Book 54, Hadith 536
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Once while a prophet amongst the prophets was taking a rest underneath a tree, an ant bit him. He, therefore, ordered that his luggage be taken away from underneath that tree and then ordered that the dwelling place of the ants should be set on fire. Allah sent him a revelation:– “Wouldn’t it have been sufficient to burn a single ant? (that bit you): (See Page 162, chapter No. 153).
